Wendy has had a life which has been varied and exciting. She commenced my career as a Professional Ballroom/Latin Dance Teacher and Adjudicator, teaching both children and adults. Her career path progressed from Customer Service with airlines, Flight Attendant for a major airline and Exclusive Air Cruising company to Event Management. Wendy’s life has not been without challenges but out of challenges have come wonderful opportunities for further learning and development. Wendy received a book called "You Were Born Rich" by Bob Proctor and became hooked on the information. After attending a live event she then wrote two books on the subject of empowering people to follow their dreams. This led to Wendy’s current journey to take this information and make it available for children. Inner Genius was born. Good morning Wendy and welcome to Radio Toni Let’s recap – last week we talked about the journey of Inner Genius – which inspires people with enquiring minds to imagine, dream, achieve and succeed. This week we are going to delve a little deeper into one of your programs and this week we want to talk about the education of teenagers. Toni - The teenage brain is wired to learn and its an exciting time of life for them. Teenagers are becoming increasingly independent whilst undergoing a whole range of physical, emotional, and cognitive changes. The control center of the brain, the pre frontal cortex, responsible for planning, goal setting, decision making and problem solving undergoes significant changes at this time. Laurence Steinberg, author of Age of Opportunity: Lessons From the New Science of Adolescence, notes that ages 12 to 25 are a period of extraordinary neuro plasticity. “Science suggests that it’s important for kids to be challenged and exposed to novelty in order to facilitate healthy development of brain systems that are important for things like self-regulation,”
Steinberg says. 1. Wendy, with this in mind, what specifically does your education program offer to young minds? Discovering who they are, intellectual facts, success and happiness and gratitude attitude 2. What are the two teenage age groups that you cater for? 3. We know that teenage minds have the capacity to become functionally smarter and that they have formed images of themselves as smart, but what about those teenagers that struggle, how does your program install a greater confidence in your teenager if they are struggling? 4. We know teenagers are encouraged to take on more and more responsibility for their learning as they age. How does your Inner genius program encourage self-directed learning? “explain it to your brain”. 5. In researching for today’s show I read an article that talked about encouraging teenagers to not just read but to think through the idea that they are reading about. How does Inner Genius use these concepts to cement teenage learning? Creating diagrams, summarizing learnings, reviewing, and summarizing videos. 6. The inner Genius program is self-directed but are their avenues for parents to keep up with what their teenager is learning? 7. Is it a good idea for parents of teenagers to schedule their Inner genius Coursework into their daily lives and if so what are the benefits? Planning is a developing teen skill and by exposing them to scheduling of their inner genius course work parents are helping to develop their scheduling skills and create a lifelong valuable skill. 8. Let’s talk about teenagers and mindset – one of the key components of your course. There is so much research out there about the importance of educating teenagers on the concept of mindset, in particular growth mindset. We know that toughness, failure and perseverance and consequences are part of the key to a successful life. I know this is something you are particularly passionate about Wendy. How does Inner Genius teens program deal with the learning around these concepts – failure is part of life, there are consequences for your actions, how to handle setbacks, focus on effort and not results? 9. Teenagers today have a lot to cope with and this makes them less happy and satisfied with their lives. Again, the research would suggest that since the rise of tech such as iPhones, teens have been less happy. How does Inner Genius tackle the concept of [Type here] teenage happiness in the course? – creativity, compassion, connection, gratitude, learning and unplugging from social media. 10. One of the chapters in the coursework focuses on Gratitude – an attitude of gratitude – Why is it so important that we teach our teens to have an attitude of gratitude? Practice looking for the good in life and people, encouraging them to express gratitude, volunteering, saying thank you, 11.
