LEGENDARY 'LABELLE' SINGER

NEW MUSICAL COLLABORATION WITH GARY LUCAS

THE WORLD OF CAPTAIN BEEFHEART

Nona Hendryx (born October 9, 1944), is an American vocalist, record producer, songwriter, musician, author, and actress. Hendryx is known for her work as a solo artist as well as for being one-third of the trio Labelle, who had a hit with "Lady Marmalade." Her music has ranged from soul, funk, and R&B to hard rock, new wave, and new-age. Her family's last name was originally spelled with an "i"; she is a cousin of American musician Jimi Hendrix.

Hendryx was born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1944 where she met fellow New Jersey native Sarah Dash and later met Philadelphia-born singer Patricia Holte (Patti LaBelle). After a short-lived tenure as a member of the Del-Capris, Hendryx and Dash formed a singing group with Holte (once the lead singer of a girl group in Philadelphia called The Ordettes). In 1961, Cindy Birdsong, from Camden, New Jersey, became the fourth member of the group, who became the 'Bluebelles' and signed their first deal with Newtown Records.

After the release of their debut hit, 1962's "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman", their name altered again to Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles. Hendryx's husky alto differed from Dash's sharp soprano, LaBelle's mezzo-soprano and Birdsong's second soprano. During this tenure, the group became known for their emotional live performances and their renditions of classic standards such as "You'll Never Walk Alone", "Over The Rainbow"and "Danny Boy". The group often found themselves competing against girl groups such as The Chantels, Shirelles and The Supremes. In 1967, Hendryx, LaBelle and Dash were shocked to discover that Birdsong had secretly joined the Supremes after Florence Ballard was ousted from the group by Motown. Different members of the group were in touch with Birdsong over the years. Birdsong's relationships with the Bluebelles healed and they came together again for the ceremony when the group won an R&B Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.

Back to the current release in question: Gary Lucas and Hendryx starred in a symphonic Captain Beefheart Tribute with Amsterdam's famed 65-piece Metropole Orchestra at the Paradiso a few years ago.  The album was co-produced by Gary and Jesse Krakowand recorded at EastSide Sound in NYC. The World of Captain Beefheart is being released by Knitting Factory Records on November 10th

The World of Captain Beefheart strikes a fine balance between the more bluesy and groove-accessible songs in the good Captain's oeuvre and the more extreme, darker and weirder side.

Nona Hendryx is a longtime fierce admirer of Don Van Vliet's music, and possesses the huge voice and the commanding stage presence necessary to do full justice to repertoire that originally featured Beefheart's unforgettable multi-octave voice. Although she's best known as a funk/soul great thanks to her long tenure with international hitmakers Labelle (as well as the group's antecedent, Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles) as well as her own excellent R&B-rooted solo outings, she is no stranger to experimental rock territory, having been featured as guest vocalist with cutting-edge ensembles including Talking Heads, Bill Laswell's Material, and Jerry Harrison's Casual Gods.

To this day, Don Van Vliet remains a cult hero, relatively unknown in mainstream circles. If any album is able to change that, it's The World of Captain Beefheart.

Watch for the release of The World of Captain Beefheart featuring Nona Hendryx and Gary Lucas on November 10th from Knitting Factory Records.

BLUES/ROCK GUITAR LEGEND

FOR SAVOY BROWN

ON THE RAY SHASHO SHOW

Anyone who witnessed Savoy Brown leave the blocks in 1965 would speak of a similar epiphany. Back then, the band were the spark that ignited the blues-boom, signing to Decca, opening for Cream’s first London show and boasting a lead guitarist who was being namedropped in the same reverential breath as peers like Clapton and Hendrix (with whom Simmonds jammed). Already, the guitarist was emerging as the band’s driving force. “I had a vision,” he reflects. “When I started the band back in 1965, the concept was to be a British version of a Chicago blues band. And the exciting thing now is that vision is still alive.”

Soon, Savoy Brown had achieved what most British bands never did – success in America – and became a major US draw thanks to their high-energy material and tireless work ethic. “There’s far too much said about sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll,” Simmonds told Classic Rock. “It’s a cliché. We were all extremely hard-working guys. When we came over to America, we were like a little army. I look at that time as being filled with incredible talent.”

Times changed, of course, and by 1979, Simmonds had moved from a London he no longer recognized – “The punks were everywhere!” – to settle permanently in New York. The Savoy Brown band members came and went, and the music scene shifted around him, but the guitarist stuck thrillingly to his guns and reaped the rewards, performing in iconic venues like Carnegie Hall and the Fillmore East and West, releasing thirty-odd albums, and later enjoying a well-deserved induction into Hollywood’s Rock Walk of Fame.

Even in the post-millennium, while his peers grow soft and drift into semi-retirement, Simmonds retains a vision and an edge, spitting out acclaimed albums that include 2011’s Voodoo Moon, 2014’s Goin’ To The Delta, 2015’s The Devil To Pay – and the emphatic new addition to Savoy Brown’s catalogue, Witchy Feelin’. “I'm amazed that I still have the energy inside me to play guitar, create music and write songs,” he considers. “I’ve been blessed in my life and I thank God for that. I’ve never been a believer in holding on to the past – I don’t look over my shoulder and congratulate myself. I always want to climb the next mountain – and I’m very pleased with this new album…”

Guest Occupation: A singer, songwriter of pathos, beauty, sadness, tempest, magic, love of life and joy
Guest Biography:

ANGELA MCCLUSKEY

“Angela has the voice of an angel…completely commands the room and draws
you in…mesmerizing.  She once sat me down and sang Leonard Cohen’s
“Famous Blue Raincoat” to me.  I was instantly in love.” — Norman Reedus

“ANGELA McCLUSKEY !!!  She knows her light that glows from within.
She is a singer/songwriter of pathos, beauty, sadness, tempest, magic, love
of life and joy,…..she is the voice of all things” —  Michael Stipe

THE STORY, SOFAR

After being hailed by Vanity Fair as a “chortling, cussing, room-dominating
force of nature” trying to describe Angela McCluskey in words is not the
easiest thing to do; if you’ve met her or been lucky enough to see her perform
you—will understand.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Angela first achieved recognition as the singer
of the much-adored LA band Wild Colonials—with whom she released
three albums: Fruit of Life (1993), This Can’t Be Life (1996) and Reel Life
in 2000. In that same year, Angela also released Curio, an album of torch
songs she recorded with husband Paul Cantelon, Lili Haydn, and cellist
Martin Tillman.

In 2004, after touring the U.S. with renowned artists REM, she wrote the #1
best selling GRAMMY nominated song Breathe, with French electronic trio,
Telepopmusik. In between Genetic World and Angel Milk, the two albums she
recorded with them, Angela was signed by Arif Mardin to the celebrated
Blue Note label who released Angela’s critically acclaimed album The
Things We Do— which Paste Magazine described as an album that “will
break your heart and gently put it back together again”.

In 2010, her second solo album You Could Start a Fight in An Empty House,
brought recognition from Alan Magee at The Guardian, who heralded her voice
and style as “an incredible juxtaposition of the greats: Beth Gibbons, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone.”

During the next couple of years Angela collaborated as both co-writer and singer
with Morgan Page and BT on the smash hit #1 dance single ’In the Air’ and was featured heavily on Robbie Robertson’s ‘How to be Clairvoyant’ as well as working with Paul Oakenfold, Parov Stellar, Kendrick Lamar and others—and her re-imagining of George Harrison’s Here Comes The Sun for the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund made us all wonder if we could ever hear the original song again.

In New York City 2014 , Angela wrote and performed Catch a Falling Star,
a one woman play focusing on her Scottish upbringing as well as a brief but
magical encounter with Nina Simone.

In the fall of 2015, Angela was cast for a special guest appearance in The Knick,
directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Clive Owen. She recently worked with Soderbergh again on The Girlfriend Experience

Also, in 2015, renowned photographer and filmmaker Bruce Weber screened his
short film Wine and Cupcakes at The Sundance Film Festival. The film features
Angela and her husband composer Paul Cantelon in what could be described as
Weber’s love letter to New York City. This was followed by Angela performing alongside Elvis Costello, Meshell N’Degeocello, as well as Louden, Martha and Rufus Wainwright for 5 nights at TED Talks Live: Six nights of talks on Broadway, broadcast on PBS in New York City. It was a fitting end to a great year.

In 2016, Angela was featured as co-writer and singer on Big Gigantic’s latest single, The Little Things, which exploded to #3 on the Global Spotify chart and was featured in Nike’s new campaign and on Season 2 ofFOX TV’s hit show, Empire.

Okay, so there is a little back story on Angela McCluskey—and now to bring you up to date.

On July 29th 2016, Angela will be releasing her new single You and Me from her upcoming album The Roxy Sessions to be released through Bernadette Records.

The idea for the album was born on a wonderful night at The Roxy Hotel in
New York City. The hotel has a beautiful room downstairs called The Django
that is reminiscent of Paris in the 1960’s…think Brigitte Bardot dancing on
the table or Serge Gainsbourg leaning against the wall with a cigarette
hanging dangling from his lip.

Even before Angela started working with Parov Stellar, her band had been
messing around with Electro Swing— she had just completed a track with
the Vince Giordano Orchestra for HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. Inspired by
the confluence of events, Angela called producer/songwriter Kiran Shahani
(Supreme Beings of Leisure/Bitter:sweet) and asked if he would like to
collaborate on ‘a 1920’s inspired ’60’s album’.

As soon as Kiran signed on, they discussed the concept with The Roxy Hotel
who offered the chance for them to record the album at the hotel as well as
begin a weekly artist residency. From the point on, everything else fell into place.

In many ways, the theme of the album was inspired by the events surrounding it.

It is a record that celebrates coming through it all—the success, the failure, the heartache and despair— and finding yourself being a little less dramatic about love and intent on just enjoying your life and being thankful
for what you’ve got— and that’s something worth celebrating.

Guest Occupation: Author of World Top Secret
Guest Biography:

RODNEY M. CLUFF, author of World Top Secret: Our Earth IS Hollow! was born and raised in the American colony of Colonia Juarez in northern Mexico. He became interested in the Hollow Earth Theory at the age of 16 while working on a New Mexico farm where the farm manager told the workers of the theory. He thought, What an ideal place for the Lord to hide the Lost Tribes of Israel!

After graduating from high school, Mr. Cluff served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico where he met his wife. One year after his release, they were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple and now have five lovely children, fifteen lovelier grandchildren, and two even lovelier great-grandchildren!

They moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where one day Mr. Cluff noticed an advertisement of Raymond Bernard's book, The Hollow Earth in a tabloid newspaper. He sent for it and thereby began many years of study and writing which has led to the present work. After 16 years with the Arizona Department of Health Services working as an Information Technology Specialist, Mr. Cluff retired and now lives with his wife Keta in the retirement community of Sun City, Arizona, and continues his research into evidences for hollow planets as a hobby.

He firmly believes: OUR EARTH IS HOLLOW!  Backed with scientific evidence, including satellite photos of the polar holes, analysis of the observations of polar explorers, analysis of earthquake data and much more -- coupled with evidence from the scriptures and history that the Lost Tribes of Israel are now FOUND within the Hollow of Our Earth, he presents his argument in favor of the Hollow Earth Theory.

It is his hope that someday, he may have the privilege of visiting his cousins of the Ten Tribes in the North Countries of the Hollow Earth! The author's own ancestry is of Israelitish origin, of the Tribe of Ephraim, and can be traced back to the Exile of the Ten Tribes from Palestine when they were carried captive into Assyria in 721 B.C.

The Ten Tribes were held captive for over a century by the Assyrians, but then escaped over the Caucasus mountains sometime before Babylon conquered Assyria in 605 B.C. They made their home in the region of the Crimea and the Steppe of Russia just north of the Black Sea up until the first century B.C. While there, they were ruled by an illustrious leader named Odin. The Roman armies threatened to conquer the region so his ancestors, because of their fierce love of freedom and independence, determined to migrate. From their custom of burying their dead in burial mounds, their migrations have been traced from the Black Sea up the valley of the river Dnieper in Russia to the Baltic Sea and from thence to northern Germany and Scandinavia.

One branch of these people became known as the Sakae or Saxons and settled in Northern Germany. Shortly after the Romans left the British Isles in the fourth century A.D., certain Celtic tribes of the British Isles invited the Engles, Saxons, and Jutes (who had previously raided the east coast of England as pirates) to bring their bands over and help defeat other Celts. From the eighth to the eleventh century they were known as the Scandinavian Vikings. They became the most volatile seapower and military force in Europe. They often attacked coastal areas with fleets that ran into the hundreds of ships and highly organized armies of several thousand. The French became weary of being looted each harvest season and so they invited the Vikings to accept a large section of France and raise their own crops. The Norsemen agreed and the territory became known as Normandy, or loved of the Norsemen.

The Author's Clough-Cluff forefathers were of the Vikings who settled Normandy in France. They came to England with William The Conqueror in 1066 A.D. In the distribution of lands among his officers, a large estate fell to one CLOUGH in Yorkshire. This estate has been transmitted from father to son until the present time and is known as the Esquire Clough Estate, and is situated about 26 miles from the old city of York.

In the year 1635, fifteen years after the first Pilgrims immigrated to America, at about the age of 19 to 21, John Clough with his brother sailed from London, England on the Clipper ship The Elizabeth. Upon arriving in America, John Clough settled in Massachusetts. One of his descendants, David Cluff, changed the spelling of his last name when he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (commonly known as the Mormons) in 1830. Therefore, all Cluff's in the world, to this author's knowledge, are descendants of this David Cluff, whose ancestry can be traced back through the Saxons and Vikings to the House of Israel.

In 2003, Rodney was contacted by Steve Currey of the Expedition Company of Provo, Utah who asked him to help plan an expedition to Our Hollow Earth.  They put together the Voyage to Our Hollow Earth Expedition with plans to take an airliner into the Arctic to pin-point the location of the North Polar Opening, and then follow that with a sea expedition chartering the Russian Nuclear Icebreaker, the Yamal.

Unfortunately, in 2006, three months before the departure date of the over flight of the Arctic, Steve discovered he had 6 inoperable brain tumors, and died two months later.  His family cancelled their involvement in the expedition and returned all expedition members' monies.

Many expedition members expressed interest to continue the quest to reach Inner Earth, and so an expedition member, Dr. Brooks Agnew offered to be their new expedition leader.  Dr. Agnew formed a new expedition company, put up a new expedition website and began to gather donations for the new North Pole Inner Earth Expedition.  Unfortunately, Dr. Agnew resigned September 8, 2013 citing losses to his electric car company.
