Andrew D. Basiago

The discoverer of life on Mars, Andrew D. Basiago, 47, is an American trial lawyer, writer, and environmental scholar. He was born on September 18, 1961 in Morristown, New Jersey, the youngest of five children, and grew up in New Jersey and California. Andy was one of the "whiz kids" who served from 1969 to 1972 in DARPA's time-space exploration program, Project Pegasus.

A past member of Mensa, the high IQ society, he holds five degrees, including a BA in History from UCLA and a Master of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge. While an undergraduate at UCLA, Andy became a journalist and a protégé of editor Norman Cousins of the Saturday Review, who once compared him to Robert Hutchins and nominated him to be the Editor of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. He was inspired by a meeting with architect Buckminster Fuller in 1981 to pursue a career in environmental policy. After their meeting, Fuller wrote: "Andrew Basiago's integrity augurs well for humanity's continuance in (the) Universe."

Andy began his career writing articles about the urban environment for Los Angeles newspapers, national periodicals, and the Cousteau Society magazine Calypso Log. He studied environmental law at Northwestern School of Law of Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, and then went on to design nature-friendly urban plans for cities in California and study environmental law and policy with Professor Malcolm Grant at Cambridge. His papers about the theory and practice of urban sustainability have been published in international, peer-reviewed journals in Australia, Britain, and the United States, cited widely, and placed in the environmental policy collections of major university libraries.

Andy was admitted to the Washington State Bar Association in 1996. Mark Schumacher

Mark Schumacher attended the University of Fla. as a pre-med major and later worked for 5 years in emergency medicine. After delivering babies in the field, as well as working with cardiac arrest and trauma injuries, he turned his attention to health education, wellness, and fitness.

As a sports coach for nearly 35 years, he currently is a health coach helping individuals understand that they have a choice in how healthy they can be. Angie Mattson

Angie Mattson grew up in Michigan being the eldest of eight siblings. While working at a recreation center she taught herself piano at age 14. In High School she sang and toured with a local theatre. While living on a boat in Florida she taught herself to play guitar. During her two year stay living on a boat and traveling in the West Indies, she began her song writing debut. Soon her songs became so popular that she made the move to Los Angeles where she recorded a demo with producer Rudy Haesermann called "Monarch." The demo caught the attention her now manager Michael Hausman.

Many of her songs could be heard in many films and TV Shows. Her debut album, Given to Sudden Panic and Noisy Retreat which includes noteworthy songs such as "Drive," "In Violet" and "Hiding Cards" was produced by Nathan Larson and was released by her independent label Radio Nine Records in 2007. Her music is wide ranged in genre from soul to folk to blues to rock and all the above. Many have tried to compare her but once you've listened to her music, you will be captivated by both her sound and ballad.

Paul Petersen
Founder of A Minor Consideration

Paul Petersen has been through practically the worst that can happen to a former child star when the Hollywood tide suddenly turns and one is no longer a part of the neat elite. Unlike others, however, such as Anissa Jones, Rusty Hamer and Dana Plato, he survived. As a result, actor Paul Petersen today is THE most dedicated advocate in protecting both present-day child stars and shunned one-time celebrity tykes alike. Paul formed A Minor Consideration, a child-actor support group back in 1990, and it has had a tremendously positive and profound effect in Hollywood.

It started out much differently for Paul back in the 50s. Born in 1945 in Glendale, California, he had an enthusiastic stage mother who pushed him into the business. He began performing as an eight-year-old as one of the original "Mousketeers" on the "Mickey Mouse Club" in 1955. He also appeared in such movies as The Monolith Monsters (1957) and Houseboat (1958) opposite the likes of Cary Grant and Sophia Loren before scoring big at age 12 as Donna Reed's son on her popular sitcom. With Carl Betz as his highly practical doctor dad and Shelley Fabares as his older pretty sister, the foursome became the ideal nuclear family for late 50s/early 60s viewers. Paul and his alter-ego Jeff Stone literally grew up on the show. By his teens, the good-looking, dark-haired lad had become a formidable heartthrob. Fan clubs sprouted up everywhere. So popular were both Paul and Shelley that they spun off into recording careers, groomed to become singing idols despite their modest voices. She scored with the #1 hit "Johnny Angel" and he had a few minor hits with "She Can't Find Her Keys," "Keep Your Love Locked," "Lollipops and Roses" and "My Dad."

The fun ended, however, after the show's demise in 1966. His All-American teen typecast didn't fit the bill as the dissonant Vietnam counterculture took hold. His acting attempts as a serious young adult also went nowhere. Audiences still saw Paul as Jeff Stone. Roles in A Time for Killing (1967), Something for a Lonely Man (1968) (TV) and Journey to Shiloh (1968) came and went. Guest parts on "The Virginian" and "The FBI" did nothing to advance him. What he could scrape up were such outdated roles as "Moondoggie" in a revamped Gidget TV movie.

Lost and abandoned, Paul eventually was forced to give it all up and went through a period of great personal anguish and turmoil. Wisely, he enrolled at college and started writing adventure novels (penning 16 books in all). For 10 years he ran his own limousine service. His biggest accomplishment to date, however, has been to give back selflessly to an industry that unceremoniously dumped him. In essence, A Minor Consideration is an outreach organization that oversees the emotional, financial and legal protection of kids and former kids in show business. Among the issues Paul deals with are better education, and stricter laws regarding a 40-hour work week. For those who have "been there, done that" and are experiencing severe emotional and/or substance abuse problems, he offers a solid hand in helping them find a renewed sense of purpose. Julie has appeared on recordings for record labels as diverse as Rough Trade through to BMG and appeared in front of twenty thousand people at festivals across Europe, from Belgium to Holland to Germany and Greece. Her radio work is as varied as John Peel to Radio 2 and Jazz FM. She has done residencies at Ronnie Scotts, wrote and performed with Mikis Theodorakis and has written and produced for George Michael's Aegean Label.

In 1938, high in the mountains of BayanKara-Ula on the borders of China and Tibet, a team of archaeologists were conducting a very detailed routine survey of a series of interlocking caves when they were surprised to discover lines of neatly arranged graves which contained the skeletons of what appeared to have been a race of human beings. The skeletons, measuring a little more than four feet tall, were frail and spindly with disproportionately large skulls. Drawn on the walls of the caves were crude pictures of the rising Sun, the Moon, unidentifiable stars, and the earth, all joined together by lines of pea-sized dots. The cave drawings are dated around 12,000 years ago. While studying the skeletons, one of the members of the team stumbled upon a large round stone disc half buried in the dust on the floor of the cave. The disk was approximately nine inches in diameter and three-quarters of an inch thick. In the exact center was a perfectly round, 3/4" hole, and etched in its face was a fine groove spiraling out from the center to the rim, making the disk resemble some kind of primitive phonograph record. This one plate, dated to be between 10,000 and 12,000 years old -- older by far than the great pyramids of Egypt -- was fantastic enough, but the wonder was multiplied when 716 such plates were found! Each held an incredible secret. The groove, upon further inspection, was not a groove at all, but a continuous line of strange carved hieroglyphics -- writing! The tiny, almost microscopic characters were in a language never encountered before.

It wasn't until 1962 that another Chinese professor, Dr. Tsum Um Nui, was able to decode the message of the stone plates. The writing was so small that he had to use a magnifying glass to see it clearly, and much of the hieroglyphics were difficult to make out or had been worn away by time and the elements. The professor painstakingly transcribed the characters from the disk to paper. Once the characters were transcribed, Dr. Tsum Um Nui began the arduous task of trying to decode its message. Eventually, he began to make progress. A word emerged - then another. A phrase became understandable, then an entire sentence. He had broken the code. He discerned that the messages on the stones were written by a people who called themselves the Dropa. When he had completed the translation as much as he could, the professor sat back in his chair in disbelief. The story the Dropa related was nothing short of astounding. The Dropa disks tell the story of a space probe from a distant planet that crash-landed in the Baian-Kara-Ula mountains of the Himalayas. The occupants of the spacecraft - the Dropa - found refuge in the caves of the mountains. Despite their peaceful intentions, the Dropa were misunderstood by members of the Han tribe who were occupying neighboring caves and who hunted down the aliens and even killed some of them. A translation of one of the passages says: "The Dropa came down from the clouds in their aircraft. Our men, women, and children hid in the caves ten times before sunrise." When at last the Han understood the sign language of the Dropa, they realized that the newcomers had peaceful intentions. The stones go on to say how the Dropa were unable to repair their disabled spacecraft and could not return to their home planet, and so were stranded on Earth. If that's true, have their descendents survived? Today, the isolated area is inhabited by two tribes of people who, in fact, call themselves the Dropa and the Han. Anthropologists have been unable to categorize either tribe into any other known race; they are neither Chinese nor Tibetan. Both tribes are of pygmy stature, adults measuring between 3-foot-6 and 4-foot-7 with an average height of 4-foot-2, and body weights of 38 to 52 pounds. The Dropa stones may represent the first recorded visit of an alien civilization to our planet. In Russia several of the rocks were tested. The discs were found to contain large amounts of cobalt and other metallic substances. When placed on a special turntable they vibrated or hummed in an unusual rhythm as though an electric charge was passing through them. It is as if they formed some part of an electrical circuit

Take Lucinda Williams, for instance: In the late summer of 2008, just a couple of months after the venerated singer-songwriter and multiple Grammy Award winner first heard Ruby at the Hyperion Tavern in Los Angeles' Silver Lake district, Williams joined her for a number on stage at Hollywood's Hotel Café.

Blessed with a bold, octave-leaping voice and a brace of rapturous radio-friendly songs, Ruby is poised to leap out of the pack. Her crackling live performances showcase a singer who has melded a panoply of diverse musical tributaries – Bessie Smith, Etta James, Patsy Cline, Whitney Houston, PJ Harvey – into a distinctive, unclassifiable, high-powered, utterly surprising style of her own.

She's radio-active: During 2008-09, she graced the airwaves with a live performance on the late, lamented Indie 103.1, regular spins on Rodney Bingenheimer's legendary KROQ show "Rodney on the ROQ," and airplay from guest DJ Rosanna Arquette on Chris Douridas' KCRW program "New Ground." She has appeared on RocknRoll Television.com and cut a live session at ChessVolt Studios for the indie music site Luxury Wafers.

She has wowed audiences at the Hotel Café, the Mint, the Viper Room, Three Clubs, and the Echo in Los Angeles, and played three stomping shows during the 2009 South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. The renowned audio equipment manufacturer Sennheiser, which sponsored one of her SXSW gigs, named her their "Unsigned Artist of the Month" for March 2009.

The titian-haired vocalist's recent studio activity brought her together with some noted producers. Sessions with the team Beethoven – Alex Elena and Josh Valleau, known for their work with Grammy nominee Alice Smith and Little Jackie – yielded the hit-worthy tracks "Shooting Stars" (currently available on iTunes, and heard in NBC network promos for "America's Got Talent") and "Hang Around," as well as a scorching cover of the Beatles' "I Want You/She's So Heavy." Her original "Sex" was mixed by Mike Chapman (Blondie, the Knack, Pat Benatar).

Ruby has performed and recorded with some storied players: John Taylor (Duran Duran), Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake (X), Tony Gilkyson (Lone Justice, X), Gregg Sutton (Lone Justice), Michael Ward (Glen Campbell, the Wallflowers), Brian Head (John Doe, Dead Rock West), Bob Thiele, Jr., and many others.

The members of her band the Ruby Friedman Orchestra – all seasoned L.A. pros – include keyboardist Arlan Schierbaum, keyboardist for the seminal funk unit Mandrill; bassist Dorian Heartsong, a veteran of stints with Powerman 5000 and Everlast; guitarist Adam Zimmon, who has toured with country legend Glen Campbell and Latin star Shakira; trombonist Ulf Bjorlin, a classically trained player who also performs with Vaud and the Villains; and, on drums, producer Alex Elena, whose credits include touring and studio work with Avril Lavigne, Belinda Carlisle, and Bruce Dickinson.

Invariably, audience members at a Ruby Friedman Orchestra show are left hunting for superlatives to describe what they've just seen.
