There are 5 items for "survival":
- Water clean enough to drink, 1 1/2 - 2 gallons a day per person. Difficult! If you are "on the move." OR in the cities.
- Food; You CAN go without food for 30 - 40 days I just about did this on a "fast" to lose weight. But in the last 30 days I became very depressed - I think my brain was starving! I lost a pound a day.
- Fuel to stay warm; about 4 cords of wood could get you through an average winter. That`s with the extra rooms closed off and NO heat at night - you`ll need some wool blankets. A cold house is a VERY Depressing experience so fuel is important. Warm clothes are included here - check your inventory.
- Taking a bath; 2 one gallon plastic [milk] jugs of warm - hot water [a substitute shower] will suffice every 4 - 5 days. Going longer than that is uncomfortable! God knows how they did it in Medieval Times!
- Eliminating waste; In extreme survival, Urine should be saved and put on the garden plot - Ammonia is a great fertilizer! But feces should be buried well away from living areas. The problem is the flies, fleas, rodents, mosquitos carry diseases that are potentially deadly to humans like Bubonic Plague, West Nile virus, Russian Encephilitis, and there are diseases that strike in a weakened condition like Tuberculosis, Pneumonia, Typhus - especially older people. If you see dead birds around it means the mosquitos are carrying West Nile. Fleas & rodents carry the deadly Plague - the reason bathing is important! Also a tremendous danger to the cities.
* Notice, with the power out and the water NOT running in the cities, the streets unsafe, the supplies to the grocery stores not coming in, 4 of the 5 ABOVE ITEMS could be impossible to get! |
