Lancifer,
I agree the "indoor hydroponics" scheme is a total pipe dream. Just think of how many plants you'd need to sustain one human. This is not just a little marijuana cash crop. Then think about how many light bulbs you'd need to grow those plants. We'd be talking about 10,000 watts for ten hours a day, at least. Then think about what you'd need to power those light bulbs. If you use an intermittent source, like wind, you'd need batteries to provide constant power. Batteries for 100kw/h per day? About the only thing feasible would be hydropower on a fairly significant scale. Ten kilowatts of hydro is pretty serious--bigger than the usual "home hydro" kits which provide maybe 1 or 1.5 kw IF you have a lot of head. Plus spare parts and the like, since they won't be making any more of them. And that's for one person. What if you have ten people?
I think the hydroponics idea was offered as a way of softening the realization of what is actually likely, namely, lots of fishing. When you get right down to it, if it will be all-but-impossible to garden due to low light, and terrestrial animals also die out due to lack of food, then you're going to be eating either bugs or things that eat bugs, with fish the most obvious choice. Maybe frogs and birds as well. Deer etc. could be important for the first year or so, as they will likely be plentiful and the meat could be dried and preserved.
