| Living on the edge of perdition sort of leaves me with a general feeling of 'drowning in a sea of weirdness'. And it is not my imagination, the weirdness keeps getting reported in the news. Net Nudes ... about a dozen high school girls, age 11 to 14, took (pictures) of themselves. They sent the naked pictures to their boyfriends and that's when police say the criminal activity happened. If there were an award for weirdness it would have to go to the parents of these hyper-hormonal females. They became angry because of the ensuing investigation and not over the antics of their children. Now if this were the only bit of weirdness it might seem extraordinary but certainly not indicative of culture breakdown. It is when you start gazing along the American cultural horizon that you begin to sense a decent into moral relativism. One recent example of this is the woman who befriended a young girl (Megan) on the net under the pretense of being a young male, and then with malice, abruptly and brutally told the young girl that she (disguised as he) no longer wanted to be her friend. Megan was not a very strong child, she became despondent and committed suicide. I am not suggesting that this sick woman caused Megan to commit suicide, but her viciousness, directed at a child, is surely another sign of just how strange our world has become. Ever since we moved to Northern Utah I kept insisting to Jill that we lived on the edge of perdition. I based this on the constant metro area news of drug trafficking, gangland shootings, assault and robbery. And as is her way she would insist that we lived on the edge of a beautiful wilderness. Oddly enough we are both right. We live at the very edge of the metropolitan area and just a couple of miles north of us begins a great expanse of farmland and rustic mountains extending up into Idaho. I guess it is sort of the old, 'is the half glass of water half full or half empty' comparison. In my mind no matter how I look at it I can't deny what is right in front of me. I suppose the recent spurt of church and mall shootings is what stimulated this post. It wasn't that long ago when Utah had its own mall shooting. And yet if I think only of these things, then I have no room left to dwell on the good Samaritan deeds that humans exhibit everyday. Such as the private rescue efforts on behalf of the Katrina victims or the five good Samaritans that prevented a rape. Five Good Smaritans Five Good Samaritans stopped a rape in progress in a south Salem neighborhood, according to police. Officers said a 22-year-old woman on crutches was walking near the intersection of Liberty and Boone streets southeast just before 1 a.m. Saturday when she was attacked and assaulted by 37-year-old Paul Landingham. According to authorities, a car with five people was driving by, saw what was happening and came to the woman's rescue. Three men pulled Landingham off the woman and held him until police arrived at the scene. So, am I living on the edge of perdition or am I living on the edge of a grand and beautiful wilderness? Ask Jill....she really does know best. Nevyn woodlandstar@hotmail.com |
