Lately there is a lot of talk on the net about the Global Consciousness Project (GCP) . Some people refer to the project as the EGG project, but that is misleading. The term ‘EGG’ is used by the GCP as an acronym for ElectroGaiaGram. And this acronym is used to describe the location of a random number generator. There are 60 such locations around the planet.

What does GCP do? In simple terms it collects the numbers generated from the EGG devices in all 60 locations around the planet to see if the devices maintain a stable random output. The interesting part of this is that they seem to become unstable during times of major news events. The EGGs measure (voltage level) static noise generated from a variety of electronic components (white noise from resistors etc.). The steady stream of this noise is gathered together in a block of 200 electronic bits. The normal flow of white noise (as measured in the block of 200 electronic bits) will fluctuate in a relatively small range having a consistent mean score. Since all the white noise levels are randomly outputted by the ‘electronic components’ it should be impossible to predict what level (voltage) of noise will occur at any given time. In others words they are randomly distributed. “The voltage level of this noise, which ranges unpredictably above and below an average level, is turned into 1's and 0's which we can count as if they were heads and tails.” (Roger Nelson) Using some simple statistical methods (Z scores) the block mean scores of these 1’s and 0’s are converted to a standard score having a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 50. This allows scores to be compared across locations. If the events are Not Random the mean standard score is either significantly above or below 100. Now this is the tricky part because a mean score of 95 or 105 is not considered non-random, that is ‘it in itself could have occurred by chance’. How far a mean score deviates from the mean of 100 is very important. In the GCP the standard deviation is expected to be 50. We could say then that a mean score of 45 or a mean score of 155 is probably not due to chance: it was probably elicited by something. And it is these types of mean scores that seem to pop up especially when there is a major news event. As an example the mean scores from these random number generators showed a bias during the 9/11 terrorist attack in the US. The graph below is taken directly from the archives of the GCP. The red line represents the standard mean scores recorded by the EGG devices in the US: notice how far they deviate from the expected mean of 100 between the 11th and 12th.

Now the question is: did the event of 9/11 cause the disruption (non random scores) in the EGG devices? Unfortunately that is not something that can be directly answered by this type of research. However, the consistent results of this project certainly do seem to indicate some type of relationship. The random numbers stream from this project are also used to trigger sound devices, and when the number stream is not random the sound changes.
